In Western languages, Shah is often used as an imprecise rendering of Šāhanšāh. For a long time, Europeans thought of Shah as a particular royal title rather than an imperial one, although the monarchs of Persia regarded themselves as emperors of the Persian Empire (later the Empire of Iran). Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi (born , Tehran, Iran—died , Cairo, Egypt) was the shah of Iran from 1941 to 1979, when he fled the Iranian Revolution and his rule officially ended following a constitutional referendum.
Today, July 27, marks 45 years since the death of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last shah of Iran who ruled for nearly four decades before the 1979 Islamic Revolution toppled him. He died in exile in Cairo, after a battle with cancer, deserted by most of his former allies, including the United States. Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei both ruled Iran for 37 years. Their shared miscalculation: that Iran’s people could be bent to their will indefinitely.
